There are a some things you need to know to enjoy Nachi Falls!
----- Today, I'll be introducing Tomogashima, an uninhabited island located off the coast of Wakayama City. Japan was at the end of the Edo period. The shogunate considered Tomogashima an important military base to protect Osaka Bay from foreign ships, and stationed personnel to monitor it. Its importance grew even more during the Meiji period, when a modern artillery battery was constructed. It began to be used as a fortress to defend the country. The battery was subsequently made even stronger, and public access was prohibited. As a top national defense secret, it was erased from detailed maps during World War II, becoming a "phantom island." But that's a modern story; going back even further, Tomogashima is considered the birthplace of Shugendo. Shugendo is a uniquely Japanese religion that involves rigorous training in nature to attain enlightenment. It is said that Tomogashima was the place where its founder, En no Gyoja, established his training grounds. It is the most important place for ascetics, and even today they still visit here first before setting out on their pilgrimage, which covers approximately 112 km. What kind of visions did they have in this literally "isolated" place? Can we get a glimpse of them?
