PART 1 — THE “JOKE” THAT WASN’T FUNNY My husband used to joke that he’d leave me for my closest friend if he ever got the chance. One day, I finally told him to stop joking, and go. My husband, Daniel, had a habit that started off as “harmless humor.” Every time my best friend, Leila, came around, he’d say something like, “If life gave me one shot, I’d run off with her.” Then he’d laugh like he’d just said the smartest thing in the room. Leila would shift uncomfortably. I’d fake a smile. “Relax,” Daniel would say. “It’s just jokes.” But it didn’t feel like a joke. At a small dinner we hosted in early spring, he raised his glass and said, “Leila, if you ever dump your man, I’m first in line. My wife might have to step aside though.” People chuckled awkwardly. I felt my face burn. Another time, when Leila helped us redecorate the living room, he said, “See? She’s efficient, organized… maybe I picked the wrong woman.” He even said it at my own birthday gathering. “Thirty-six looks incredible on Leila. Maybe I married too early.” Everyone laughed nervously again. He put his arm around me like that fixed everything. “Don’t be sensitive,” he whispered. “You know I’m playing.” But it kept happening, over and over. Sometimes even when she wasn’t there. “I saw Leila at the mall today,” he’d say casually. “Still stunning. I swear, I’d leave everything if she gave me a sign.” At a family dinner, he actually said it in front of my parents. “You know who really belongs in this family? Leila. Perfect in every way.” The room went silent. My mother stared at him. My brother coughed awkwardly. I finally pulled him aside later that night. “You need to stop. It’s not funny. It makes me uncomfortable, and it makes her uncomfortable too. She told me she doesn’t even want to come over anymore.” He rolled his eyes. “She enjoys the attention. Don’t pretend women don’t like that.” “She doesn’t. She thinks it’s inappropriate.” “Well, that’s her problem,” he said flatly. “I’m just being honest.” That was the moment something in me started to shift. A few days later, Leila came by to help me prepare for an important presentation. We were halfway through when Daniel walked in early. “Well, look at this,” he said with a grin. “My favorite duo. So, Leila, ready to leave all this behind and run away with me yet?” She froze. I stood up. “You know what?” I said calmly. “Let’s do it.”

I’ve been holding this pain inside me for so long, but today it feels unbearable. It’s like I can’t breathe anymore. Sometimes I ask myself, am I truly a wife, or just someone hired to guard a man’s legacy? I got married 6 years ago to a man I believed was heaven-sent. He lives in Canada. Before our wedding, he assured me that within a year, he would arrange my papers so I could come and live with him. But today, I’m still here in Ghana, waiting, hoping, for a man who only remembers me when he’s about to visit. To the outside world, it looks like I’m living a dream. He built two beautiful duplexes in my name, one for me and the children, and another for rental income. He also set up a cosmetics store for me, fully stocked with expensive products. Everything is legally mine. People admire me, calling me “a blessed woman,” but what they don’t see is how empty I feel inside. All these things feel like chains, not blessings. Since our wedding, he has only visited four times. Each visit lasts barely ten days. He comes, plays the role of a husband, then disappears again. I now have two lovely daughters, but their father is more of a stranger to them than a parent. They only know him through phone screens. Last year, everything changed. Someone I trusted sent me pictures from a gathering in Toronto. There he was, my husband, holding another woman closely, both of them wearing wedding bands. When I confronted him, he didn’t even try to lie. Instead, he said, “I’ve taken care of you. You have houses, a business, security. Why are you worried about someone who is helping me survive here?” That answer broke something in me. Is marriage just about financial comfort? Is it about properties and money transfers? I’m still young, yet I feel deeply alone. I crave companionship, love, and partnership, not just responsibility and silence. He acts like everything he has given me should be enough to keep me quiet. Like my role is simply to stay back home, raise children, and carry his name, while he lives a completely different life elsewhere. My family keeps telling me to endure it. They say I should think about the children and the stability he has provided. But what about me? What about my happiness, my peace of mind? Yes, I have financial security. Yes, I have a business. But I don’t have a real marriage. I don’t have a partner. Am I wrong for wanting more than this? Because right now, I feel lost.

I’m 33 years old, from a close-knit and hardworking family in a small town in Delta State. Growing up, life was comfortable. My father owned large palm plantations, and we never worried about anything, until the day he died under strange circumstances on his farm. From that moment, everything changed. It felt like a heavy shadow settled over our lives. My mother was a strikingly beautiful woman, full of life before my father passed. But after his death, things became difficult. About two years later, she met a successful businessman from Abuja. He promised stability and a fresh start for all of us. They got married, and for a while, life seemed hopeful again. But just four years into their marriage, he suddenly became ill and died. That’s when people began to talk. Whispers spread in our community, saying my mother carried bad luck. She refused to believe them. Instead, she moved us to a bigger city to start over. Eventually, she met another man, a kind and gentle soul who accepted us completely. But just when things began to feel normal again, he also passed away unexpectedly after only a year and a half of marriage. That was the breaking point for her. My mother withdrew from love completely and poured all her energy into raising us. She stayed that way until she passed away six years ago. Now, it feels like that same dark pattern has found its way to my younger sister and me. I’ve been in two serious relationships. Both ended in ways I still struggle to understand. The moment things became serious, when talks of family introductions or marriage began, something tragic happened. My first partner died in a road accident while traveling to meet my relatives. I convinced myself it was just a painful coincidence… until it happened again. My second partner collapsed and died suddenly while we were shopping for our traditional engagement ceremony. My younger sister’s story is even more heartbreaking. She got married recently and was so full of joy. But only a few months into her marriage, her husband was attacked and killed on his way home from work. Now I’m in a relationship with a man who is everything I’ve ever hoped for, kind, loving, and sincere. He’s already planning our future and wants us to get married soon. He even bought a ring. But instead of feeling happiness, I’m overwhelmed with fear. Every time he talks about our future about children, about building a life together, I feel this deep panic inside me. It’s like I’m putting his life at risk just by loving him. I haven’t told him any of this because I’m terrified he’ll leave… but I’m even more terrified of losing him the same way. My sister thinks we should avoid marriage altogether, just stay in relationships and maybe have children without making it official. But that’s not what I want. I want a home, a family, a husband to grow old with. Three days ago, he told me he wasn’t feeling well,he mentioned a sharp pain in his chest. Since then, I haven’t been able to sleep. My mind keeps racing, wondering if it’s happening again. I’m scared. Should I walk away from him to protect him? Or am I running from something that might not even be real? I feel lost… and I don’t know what to do.

My name is Daniel. I’m currently dealing with a very difficult situation at home, and I honestly don’t know what the right thing to do is. My wife has given me three days to move my sick mother out of our house and send her to stay with my sisters, who live in the same city. My mother has been living with us for about two years now, and everything was manageable at first. But a few months ago, her condition worsened and she became bedridden. Since then, things have changed drastically. My wife has been complaining more and more, saying that taking care of my mother is not her responsibility and that she cannot continue like this. I understand that caring for someone who is bedridden is not easy. It can be physically and emotionally exhausting. But at the same time, this is my mother, and I feel a deep responsibility toward her, especially in her condition. What makes it even harder for me is that I keep wondering, if the situation were reversed and it was her own mother who needed care, would she feel the same way? Now I feel completely torn between my duty as a son and my role as a husband. I don’t want to hurt my wife or ignore her feelings, but I also cannot imagine abandoning my mother when she needs me the most. The pressure of being given a deadline is making everything even more overwhelming. I feel confused, stressed, and unsure of what decision to make. I really need guidance on how to handle this situation in a way that is fair, compassionate, and doesn’t destroy my family.

About a year and a half ago, when my wife gave birth to our daughter, my aunt and my younger cousin came to stay with us for traditional postpartum support. I welcomed it with open arms. My aunt raised me after my father passed, and she worked incredibly hard to make sure I became who I am today. Having her in my home felt like a blessing. But now it’s been over a year… and they’re still here. Our apartment is small. Every night, my wife and I sleep on the bed with our baby, while my aunt and my 20-year-old cousin lay a mattress on the floor right beside us. There’s no privacy at all. We all share the same tight space, day and night. I’ve been quietly struggling with this for months. As a husband, I feel completely cut off from my wife. Anytime I try to get close to her at night, she immediately pulls away and whispers harshly, “What are you doing? They’re right here! Have you lost your mind?” Out of frustration, I made a decision I now regret. I went to speak to my aunt and cousin directly, thinking I could clear the tension. I explained the situation openly. To my surprise, my aunt laughed it off and said, “You’re a grown man. Don’t worry about us.” My cousin even joked that she would just use earphones and mind her business. I honestly thought that would solve the problem. When I went back and told my wife, expecting her to feel relieved, her reaction shocked me. She looked at me with anger and disappointment and said, “You actually discussed something that private with them? Where is your sense of respect?” Since that day, things have only gotten worse. For the past few months, she has completely withdrawn from me. She barely speaks to me, avoids any form of affection, and even turns her back when we sleep. She insists that if I want our marriage to feel normal again, I need to find a separate place for my aunt. But how can I send away the woman who sacrificed so much for me, especially when she has no stable place to go in a big city like this? What confuses me is that my aunt herself says she is comfortable and doesn’t see any problem. So why is my wife so upset? Part of me feels like my wife is using this situation as an excuse because she doesn’t truly accept my family. It’s starting to feel like I’m being forced to choose between my wife’s comfort and my responsibility to my family. I love my wife deeply, and I don’t want to ruin my marriage. But at the same time, I feel trapped, frustrated, and honestly neglected. I don’t want to make a mistake I’ll regret later, but I also don’t know how much longer I can live like this.

When I got married, I already had a little boy who was just four years old. My husband also came into the marriage with a son from a previous relationship. Later on, we were blessed with two lovely girls together. To outsiders, we look like the perfect family. My husband is respected by everyone, he provides well, treats my relatives kindly, and showers our daughters with love. But everything changes when it comes to my son. It’s as if my child doesn’t exist in his eyes. Whenever my husband comes back from work, he brings snacks and gifts for his own son and our daughters, but never anything for my boy. If my son greets him, he either ignores him or tells him to step aside. The rejection is constant, and it cuts deep. The situation with school hurts me the most. My husband spends a lot of money sending his son to a top private school, yet he clearly told me he won’t spend a single extra yen on “another man’s child.” So I struggle quietly, using whatever small savings I can gather from household money to send my son to a modest local school. His uniform is too big, his shoes are worn out, while his stepbrother looks neat and well cared for. A few days ago, my son came home full of excitement after receiving an award for being the best in Mathematics. He ran happily to show his stepfather, calling him “Daddy.” But my husband didn’t even glance at the certificate. Instead, he told him to go outside and clean the compound. I watched my son walk away, holding back tears, until he finally broke down behind the house. That moment shattered me. Even my little girls have started asking questions, why their father hugs them but not their brother. They may be young, but they can already feel the difference. Whenever I try to speak up, my husband accuses me of being ungrateful. He says I should be thankful he allows my son to stay and eat in his house. My own mother advises me to endure, saying something is better than nothing. But how do I keep enduring when my child is slowly losing his joy? He is only nine years old, yet he has become so quiet, so withdrawn. The bright, happy boy I once knew is fading. I feel completely stuck because I don’t have my own income, my husband refuses to let me work. Sometimes I lie awake at night asking myself: was it a mistake to remarry as a single mother? All I want is for this man to see my son as a human being… as a child who deserves love. I am exhausted and heartbroken. I don’t know what to do anymore. Please, I need help.

PART 1 — “Every Thursday, She Went to See Her Sister…” His name was Tunde Adebayo. He was forty-one, a quiet man who ran a small electrical supply store in Ibadan. His wife, Kemi, worked from home as a hairdresser. They had been married for eight years. Nothing dramatic. Nothing chaotic. Just routine… and peace. Until Kemi started leaving every Thursday. “I want to spend more time with my sister,” she told him one evening while ironing his clothes. “She’s been lonely lately.” Tunde didn’t question it. “Of course,” he said. “Family matters.” And so it began. Every Thursday morning, Kemi dressed neatly, packed a small bag, and left the house by 10 a.m. She always returned around 5 p.m. Always quiet. Always calm. Like someone coming back from something… sacred. For over a year, Tunde never asked a single question. Until the call came. It was a Tuesday afternoon. He was at his shop arranging invoices when his phone rang. Kemi’s older sister. He smiled as he answered. “Aunty, good afternoon” Her voice cut in, confused. “Tunde, is everything okay with Kemi?” He frowned. “Yes, why wouldn’t it be?” A pause. “She hasn’t visited me in over a year.” The room went still. “What do you mean?” he asked slowly. “She keeps telling me she’s busy whenever I call. I thought maybe something was wrong between both of you.” The phone nearly slipped from his hand. “But, she comes to see you every Thursday.” Silence. Then, “No, Tunde. The last time I saw Kemi was last Easter.” That night, he said nothing. He watched her. Really watched her. The way she moved. The way she smiled. The way she avoided nothing. She was normal. Too normal. And that was what made it worse. On Thursday morning, he kissed her goodbye like always. Then he waited. At exactly 10 a.m., she stepped out, locked the door, and got into a taxi. Tunde followed. Through busy streets. Past familiar roads. Then into a quieter part of town he didn’t recognize. Until the car stopped. And his chest tightened. It was a cemetery. Oke-Odo Memorial Grounds. He had only been there once. For a burial, years ago. He waited five minutes before going in. The air inside felt different. Heavy. Still. Then he saw her. Kemi was seated on a low stool in front of a grave. A food container open beside her. And she was talking. Not crying. Not praying. Talking. Softly, like someone sitting across from her. Like she had done this many times. Because she had. Tunde moved closer. Step by step. Heart pounding. Until he could finally see the name on the gravestone. And everything inside him stopped. The name was his. Tunde Adebayo. His full name. His exact date of birth. And a date of death. Sixteen months ago.

I want to respond to my ex-husband’s recent post. He shared that he married me, supported my education in healthcare, brought me overseas, and that I later betrayed him by helping another man relocate and starting a family with him. I’m not here to argue or defend myself. I just want to explain how everything happened so people can understand my side of the story. This is where it began. I come from a modest background. My parents had both retired from civil service, and at one point, I had to stop my studies because we simply couldn’t afford to continue. It was a painful period for all of us. During that time, a woman from our community approached my family and suggested that her son, who was working abroad, would like to marry me. My family encouraged me to accept the proposal. They knew I was already in a committed relationship with someone I deeply loved, but they also saw this as a chance for a better life. I felt pressured and torn, but I agreed, believing it would help lift my family out of hardship. After a brief period of communication, he came back home, and we got married. Before he returned overseas, I asked him for something important to me. I requested that instead of immediately processing my travel documents, he should support me in completing a nursing program locally. I believed it would be more affordable and would position me better for work later. He agreed and even praised my thinking. He paid for my tuition and arranged a comfortable place for me to live. Not long after he left, the man I had loved before came back into my life. He was heartbroken and still deeply attached to me. I was still in love with him too, and I gave in to those feelings. We resumed our relationship, and eventually, he moved in with me. To sustain everything, I began asking my husband for more financial support, often exaggerating my needs. He never hesitated , he kept sending money. Part of that money was used to enroll my partner in a tech certification program, with the hope that it would help him secure opportunities abroad. We made plans that once I settled overseas, I would help him join me. After completing my studies, I eventually relocated to join my husband abroad. He welcomed me warmly and supported me in finding work. With his help, I secured a job in a hospital and began building a stable life. All this time, I remained in contact with the man I loved. Years later, when I was financially stable, we continued with our plan. After several attempts, his visa was approved. By then, I had already made up my mind. My feelings hadn’t changed, and I knew where my heart truly belonged. I had intended to tell my husband the truth myself, but he found out before I could. I won’t pretend I handled things well, I didn’t. But at that point, I chose to be honest about my feelings. I asked for a divorce because I knew I could not continue living a lie. I understand the pain I caused. To him. Daniel, I want to say this: I am deeply sorry. You were kind, supportive, and patient with me, even when I didn’t deserve it. You tried to hold on to our marriage, even when everything had already fallen apart. That shows the kind of man you are. But the truth is, our marriage was never built on love from my side. It was built on pressure, obligation, and circumstance. My heart was always elsewhere, and staying would have been unfair to both of us. I know I hurt you, and for that, I sincerely apologize. Thank you for eventually agreeing to let me go. It couldn’t have been easy. My partner and I are prepared to repay everything you spent on me, every sacrifice you made. We are willing to make things right in that way, if you allow us. I hope that one day, you can find it in your heart to forgive me. Not to excuse what I did, but to find peace for yourself. You deserve someone who will love you fully and honestly, the way you loved me. I truly wish you happiness and healing.

My name is Amara, and I feel completely stuck right now. A while ago, my husband borrowed a huge amount of money from me, money I spent years saving. I had a clear purpose for it: to help my younger brother relocate overseas for better opportunities. I’m the eldest of four siblings. Both my parents are retired civil servants, and everything they had went into making sure I finished school and got a stable career. There’s no support from extended family, so the responsibility of providing for everyone fell on me. After graduating, I was fortunate to secure a job as a financial officer. It wasn’t easy, there were dozens of applicants. During the process, my supervisor made it clear that I wouldn’t get the position unless I gave in to his demands. I was already in a relationship at the time, but I felt trapped. Thinking about my family and our situation, I made a decision I’ve regretted ever since. Eventually, I got engaged and later married my partner. I believed that chapter of my life was over. But it wasn’t. My boss kept reaching out and pressuring me again. I resisted for a long time, but one day, I gave in, thinking it would be the final time. That was the day everything fell apart. My husband found out. He was devastated and asked me to leave. He filed for separation, and for months, I begged him to forgive me. It took serious intervention from both families before he agreed to take me back. Now, there’s another issue weighing heavily on me. Before all of this happened, he had taken a large loan from me. That money was meant for my brother’s relocation plans, and now the deadline is fast approaching. I’ve tried several times to ask him to return it, but every time I do, he brings up my mistake. He says I can’t be trusted and accuses me of wanting to misuse the money. To avoid arguments, I’ve stopped bringing it up, but the pressure is killing me. That money represents a life-changing opportunity for my brother , and honestly, for my entire family. If he succeeds abroad, it would ease the burden I’ve been carrying alone for years. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to raise that kind of money again. My husband has it, but he refuses to return it, using my past against me. I feel trapped, ashamed, and helpless, and I don’t know what to do anymore.”

I never thought I would be the kind of man telling a story like this. I met my wife eight years ago. She had already been through a failed marriage, and I believed she deserved a fresh start. After just four months of knowing her, I made the decision to marry her. People said I was moving too fast, but I didn’t listen. I thought love was enough. For the first few years, things felt right. We were building something together. Then an opportunity came for her to travel abroad for further studies. I didn’t hesitate. Even though my income here in Nigeria was modest, I took on the responsibility fully. I handled her tuition, her rent, her feeding, everything. For five years, she lived overseas while I stayed back, working and sending money regularly. Sometimes I would skip my own needs just to make sure she was comfortable. There were months I couldn’t even think of buying a car for myself because every extra naira went to her. I tried to keep the love alive. I would send gifts through friends, surprise her with flowers, call her often. But gradually, things started changing. She stopped picking my calls. Sometimes I would call five times in a day, and she wouldn’t answer or return them. Her messages became cold, distant… like I was talking to a stranger. Since she left in 2020, she didn’t visit me once. Not until last year, when I paid for her flight ticket myself. I was so excited. I even went to the airport with friends and two cars to give her a grand welcome. I wanted that moment to mean something. But when she came out… she didn’t hug me. She didn’t smile the way I remembered. There was no warmth. My friends were recording, but there was nothing to capture. When we got home, it became even clearer. For two nights, I slept in the living room because she refused to let me come close to her. That was when reality started hitting me. Along the way, I had heard rumors about her living with another man abroad. She told me he was just a roommate, and I tried to trust her. I didn’t want to be that insecure husband. But later, I saw things I couldn’t ignore, pictures, messages, evidence that broke me. One image still stays in my mind: her sitting comfortably on another man’s lap in a restaurant. That was the moment something inside me died. I started asking myself hard questions. Was I too blind? Did I sacrifice too much? Did I lose myself trying to build someone else? The truth is, while I was here struggling and sacrificing, she was building a completely different life, one that didn’t include me anymore. It took me years to finally stop sending money. And only then did I begin to rebuild my own life. I bought my first car recently, something I had postponed for so long. I’m not telling this story to play the victim. I’m telling it because I learned the hard way. Sometimes, love without boundaries becomes self-destruction. Sometimes, in trying to lift someone up, you forget to stand firm in your own place. If there’s anything I would tell my younger self, it’s this: Don’t abandon your own growth while trying to prove your love. And don’t ignore the signs when respect starts fading. Because in the end, love without respect doesn’t survive, no matter how much you give.

met Daniel three years ago when I was still in my first year at university in Accra. He came into my life like a blessing. He took responsibility for my tuition, made sure my parents never lacked anything, and even helped my younger sisters relocate to the UK for better opportunities. My parents were grateful but cautious. They pleaded with him to allow me to complete my studies before talking about marriage so I could stay focused. He agreed without hesitation. Every few weeks, he would come to campus to see me. He never came empty-handed, there was always food, gifts, and money. To everyone else, it looked like I had hit the jackpot. But that was where everything slowly started to change. Daniel is a very big man physically, while I’m quite petite. Whenever he visited, my roommates would whisper, laugh, and make jokes. They called him names, mocked his appearance, and made me feel like I didn’t belong with him. At first, I ignored it. But over time, their voices got into my head. I began to feel embarrassed, ashamed even, of the same man who was taking care of my entire life. In my second year, I met someone else, Ethan. He was everything society calls “attractive”, tall, stylish, confident. He showed interest in me, but I told him I was already in a relationship, and he backed off respectfully. Still, I couldn’t deny the truth to myself, I wanted him. But I stayed with Daniel. Not because I loved him deeply, but because of everything he had done for me and my family. I felt indebted. Fast forward to today, we’ve been married for eight months. On the outside, my life looks perfect. I have a stable home, financial security, and a husband who treats me with nothing but kindness and respect. But inside, I feel empty. When I look at him, I don’t feel love. I feel irritation. Sometimes even disgust, and I hate myself for it. The way he walks, talks, laughs… everything annoys me, even though he has done nothing wrong. Two weeks ago, I ran into Ethan again at a mall in Lekki. He was with another woman, and seeing them together broke something inside me. The jealousy I felt shocked me. I couldn’t breathe. Since that moment, I haven’t been able to keep pretending. I feel stuck. I’m living a life built on gratitude instead of love. Daniel is genuinely a good man, honest, generous, and caring. He deserves someone who truly loves him, not someone who feels trapped by what he has done for her. Every day, I cry because I don’t know how to fix this. How do you look into the eyes of a man who sacrificed so much for you, and tell him that your heart isn’t in it? I’m not happy. And this marriage, built on “thank you,” is slowly destroying me. I don’t know what to do anymore.
