I’ve been to Osaka many times, but this trip took me somewhere I never would have thought to look. I spent four days in a neighborhood I knew nothing about, and somewhere between the quiet streets, old shopfronts, and the people I met there, it became a story I couldn’t stop thinking about. I’ll tell you why soon. #osaka #fuse #higashiosaka #slowtravel #discoverjapan

Nobody really asked, but here are the protein staples living in my pantry on repeat. As someone who is watching her blood sugar and just trying to stay a little more on top of her health, these are the food finds in Japan that actually work for me — no fuss, no fancy meal prep, just the same three things eating on loop and somehow never getting old. Soft-boiled eggs I will defend with my whole chest, a tofu I’d genuinely miss if it got discontinued, and a chocolate protein powder that’s doing more heavy lifting than I am. Nothing revolutionary, just what’s been quietly holding my health goals together. Got a staple that keeps you consistent too? Pray, do tell. 🤭 #glp1 #protein #fitnessjourney #mounjaro

You might be wondering: why go through all that, just to pray your way out of a relationship? Why not just… break up? That’s fair. But I think some relationships are more complicated than that. People get financially trapped with a partner. Some are in relationships that turn violent. And sometimes it’s just hard to quit someone, even when you already know they’re not good for you. (Cue in Brokeback Mountain’s “I wish I knew how to quit you.”) For what it’s worth, I don’t think people here are leaving it up to some deus ex machina to sever their relationships for them. I think it’s more like putting your thoughts into words — the letters, the writing, all of it feels like a kind of release. I’m still not sure how I feel about the whole “make them drink statue dust” part, though. But out of all the enkiri (tie-cutting) places I’ve been to, this one is probably the tamest — because the wishes are sealed inside envelopes instead of written out on prayer plaques for anyone to read. The other enkiri places I’ve visited had so much pain in prayer plaques, to the point that some of what’s written even reads like a curse. Rather than ill intent, though, I just see it as something very human. What do you think? #fukuoka #jizo #野芥縁切地蔵尊 #縁切り#japantravel
I think it’s pretty cool that you can turn a piece of metal that probably witnessed a thousand things and give it another life as a piece of accessorry. 📍TAPTAP Lab Shinsekai 1 Chome-20-13 Ebisuhigashi, Naniwa Ward, Osaka, 556-0002 9:00 to 19:00 / Wed 10:00 to 19:00 / Thur 12:30 to 17:00 9-minute walk from Doubutsuenmae Station Prices vary but my ring was about ¥5,300 #osaka #PR #ringmaking #japantrip #shinsekai
This is the England House, tucked into Kobe’s Kitano-cho district — a neighborhood built by the foreign merchants and diplomats who settled here after the Port of Kobe opened to international trade in the late 1800s. They brought their own architecture with them, and what’s left today is one of Japan’s largest collections of Western-style mansions, known as ijinkan. Out of hundreds that once stood, only a couple dozen remain, and even fewer are open to the public. The England House itself was built in 1907 and started life as a German doctor’s residence — the ground floor still has traces of that history, including an old prescription counter. Somewhere along the way it became “England House,” and today it plays double duty: part colonial-era mansion, part full-on Sherlock Holmes homage. You can even put on a coat and deerstalker and wander the house in character. Head up to the second floor and you’re standing in a recreation of Holmes’ study, rebuilt down to the details for the museum’s 100th anniversary. And then there’s the well. I still don’t know the story behind it, but there’s a sign that says “Platform 9 3/4,” and if you look down, there’s a statue of Dobby staring back up at you. I genuinely don’t know what this place wants to be. Victorian mansion, detective shrine, wizarding world easter egg — somehow it’s all three, and somehow it works. Quirky doesn’t even cover it. #kobe #kitanocho #sherlock #harrypotter

If you have neck and shoulder pain that won’t go away, or you simply want to improve your sleep quality, I highly recommend getting a custom pillow. The service I got at Nishikawa’s Pillow Stand in Futamatagawa was amazing — they really paid attention to detail, making sure the pillow fit my exact body measurements and the way I actually sleep. I’ve been using the pillow for a week now, and I’ve already noticed my sleep quality improve. One other great thing about Nishikawa is that they offer post-purchase services too — you can still get the height adjusted even after you’ve been using the pillow for a while, which makes it feel less like a one-time purchase and more like an ongoing fit. The price varies depending on the materials you choose and your body measurements, but mine came out to about ¥33,000. 📍Pillow Stand Futamatagawa Branch 10:00 to 21:00, closed on Thursdays Reservation required Duration: 1 hr You get to take home the pillow right after, no waiting needed #PR #nishikawa #オーダーメイドまくら
You’ve got 60 seconds to steal as many snacks and drinks as you can from a convenience store. Think you could pull it off without getting caught? Well, I tried. I walked away (almost) empty-handed. Anyone who lived through COVID in Japan will recognize this one. This is Amabie. She first shows up in the historical record back in 1846, in what’s now Kumamoto. The story goes that a glowing light kept appearing over the sea for several nights in a row, until a local official finally went to check it out. What he found was this mermaid-like being with long hair, scales, a beak, three legs, the whole look. She told him good harvests were coming for the next six years, and that if sickness ever spread, people should draw her and pass her image around for protection. Then she went back into the water. For almost 175 years, that was basically it. She stayed a pretty obscure footnote in yokai folklore. Then February 2020 happened. A shop in Tokyo that sells yokai art posted her image on Twitter as a kind of coping mechanism for what was coming, and it just took off. Within weeks she was everywhere, drawings, plush toys, face masks, even tattoos, all under hashtagアマビエチャレンジ. By April, Japan’s own Ministry of Health had made her the face of their official Stop COVID campaign. And here’s what I can’t stop thinking about: she didn’t come back for the Spanish flu in 1918. Or for any other outbreak in between. It took COVID specifically to pull her out of obscurity and into basically every household in Japan. This particular Amabie statue is one of several yokai sculptures you’ll find around Fukusaki, Hyogo. Fukusaki is the hometown of Kunio Yanagita, the scholar known as the father of Japanese folklore studies, who spent his life collecting stories like hers before they could disappear. The town leaned all the way into that legacy, and now it’s basically an open air yokai gallery. Kind of a full circle way to keep his work alive. #yokai #fukusaki #japanesefolklore #hyogo #japantrip
Uh-oh, I might not be able go back to ordinary yakiniku after this.YAKINIKU KAPPOU YPRYU in Osaka just gave me one of the most visually striking and delicious yakiniku experiences I’ve had in Japan. Books have always been my safe pace, so being surrounded by storybooks, stuffed toys, and colorful trinkets is my idea of a calm morning. I have so much respect for people who devote their lives to a single craft, so once I started researching Ome, I felt strongly about giving Kubo Bankan’s story the reach it deserves. At the same time, I didn’t want to dismiss Ome’s rebrand either. If anything, it’s one of the things I love about Tokyo — how it holds space for the past and the present at once, honoring what each one adds to a place’s identity. #ome #mappingtokyo #japantravel #tokyo #showaretro
Just opened! Dashi to Sushi Tachibana is Ebisu’s newest upscale sushi izakaya, where dashi takes center stage.
