I heard Okinawa has a new theme park. Everyone's going there this summer. I did something different. I woke up at 6am and went to the Naha ferry terminal. Bought a one-way ticket — about $26. The boat left at 7. I watched a rainbow form over the water, then fell asleep on deck. Six hours later, I wasn't in Okinawa anymore. I was on Yoron. Technically it's Kagoshima. It doesn't feel that way at all. This island has over 60 beaches. Most of them, I had completely to myself. I stayed at Pricia Resort — built to look like Mykonos, Greece. On a small Japanese island. Dinner that night was some of the best food I've had in Japan. Half the price of Naha. Junglia is a jungle someone built for tourists. This island is real. Nobody built it. Believe it or not, this is Tokyo. Kozushima is a remote island about 180 kilometers south of central Tokyo. Here’s an itinerary via Blue Symphony to Yoshino then to Kumano Kodo. Day 1 Take the Blue Symphony train from Osaka to Yoshino. Visit ancient temples and witness traditional fire and water rituals before pilgrims begin their journey. Stay at a traditional ryokan inn and experience Japanese hospitality. Day 2 Drive or take the bus along the Kumano River from Yoshino to Kumano, watching the landscape gradually change.
