Akabeko is a mystical red cow from the Aizu region of Fukushima. According to legend, when Enzo-ji temple was being built, a red cow showed up to help carry the materials. After the temple’s completion, the devoted cow refused to leave. During the smallpox epidemic, children with akabeko toys did not seem to get sick. The black spots on akabeko’s back are said to be the sickness that they carried instead of the children. Today the Hello Kitty shinkansen ran for the last time! Sadly the retirement date for the train was today, May 17th. It’s been a great 8 year run! These types of trains usually run for a specific period of time.
