Ever since my Japanese students told me about Kinkaku-ji and how it was covered in gold, I knew I had to see it for myself one day. Back then, it felt like one of those places you only admire in photos or hear about in stories. When I finally got hired as a teacher in Japan, one of the places on top of my list was the Golden Pavilion. I traveled all the way from Tokyo just to see it with my own eyes, and honestly, the moment I arrived felt surreal. I still remember standing there feeling so proud of myself — proud that I made it to Japan, proud that I was finally seeing a place I once only dreamed about, and completely astonished that it was actually shining gold in real life. Photos are beautiful, but nothing compares to seeing the reflection of the golden temple sparkling under the sunlight.
