A riverside onsen ryokan in a hot spring town with 1,300 years of history. This was exactly the kind of Japan escape I had been craving. 🍃 We stayed at Kochou @kochou_yamanaka in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa. With only a few rooms and Kakusenkei Gorge just outside, everything felt peaceful from the moment we arrived. My favorite part was the private open-air bath in our suite. I opened the doors in the morning, listened to the river below, and enjoyed the kind of slow start that never happens at home. Dinner was a beautiful Kaga kaiseki experience, served course by course on Kutani porcelain and Yamanaka lacquerware. Even the tableware told a little story about the region. The town itself is small enough to explore on foot, with Ayatori Bridge, Korogi Bridge, and the riverside walking path only minutes away. The Echigo Sekikawa Oshitamonja Festival Fireworks are part of the village’s end-of-August summer celebration. In 2026, the fireworks were held on August 29 from 7 PM, followed by the famous giant snake parade on August 30. What I loved most wasn’t how many fireworks there were. It was being able to slow down, look up at the sky, and actually enjoy the moment with the people beside me.
