Discount code below⬇️ I’ve been wanting to visit Arima Onsen for a long time, so finally getting to experience the famous golden “Kinsen” waters felt really special ♨️
The whole town has a nostalgic atmosphere with little streets, old shops, steam rising everywhere, and a shrine that marks the origin of the golden onsen waters. 🇯🇵 We stayed at @hyoekoyokaku_arimaonsen , a ryokan that’s been around for over 700 years. They’ have the biggest bath in all of Arima onsen including a very unique Roman style one. My personal favorite was private outdoor onsen which was exactly what I needed after walking around town all day. 💸You can get ¥3,000 off your stay at Hyoe Koyokaku with the code “KOBE3K1” Valid until June 30th for bookings made through December 25th, 2026. 🚃Access: Take the Kobe Electric Railway to Arima Onsen Station (有馬温泉駅) and Hyoe Koyokaku is about a 5 minute walk from the station. There’s also a free shuttle pickup service from the station if you call when you arrive. It’s easy to visit from both Osaka and Kobe. Follow along at @AmberJapanTravels for more quiet spots in Japan~

Oyama is a small mountain town with a mix of tradition, nature, and food that makes it really special. It’s only 90 minutes away from Tokyo, but it feels like another world. ⛩️ Here I got to meet a local Japanese spinning top craftsmen who showed us his workshop and told us about the history of his craft. The Japanese top is more than just a toy, it’s a tradition that holds a lot of symbolism. The longer your top spins the longer your life and your luck! 🍀 After strolling down the spinning top street that had me feeling like we teleported to Showa Japan, I rode the cable car up Mt. Oyama to Afuri Shrine, a sacred spot overlooking sweeping views. One of my absolute favorite moments was stopping at Teahouse Sekison (茶寮 石尊), which is part of the shrine. The tea house was designed by a famous Japanese architect! Sitting above the clouds with a matcha tiramisu in hand was such a magical experience, it’s the kind of place where you just want to linger and take it all in. There’s a tour available (linked in my bio) that gives you the chance to walk part of the ancient pilgrimage route to Afuri shrine. Follow me at @AmberJapanTravels for more quiet Japan spots~ 🍵 #Oyama #pr #matcha#CapCut

One of the most underrated spots in Japan is the Seto Inland Sea area, and one my favorite spots in that area is 📍Kurashiki(倉敷) in Okayama Prefecture~ Once a prosperous merchant town, Kurashiki preserved its historic center instead of rebuilding it. Today, everyday life continues among canals, white-walled storehouses, and streets shaped centuries ago. I started with a walk through the 📍Bikan Historical Quarter, following the canal and admiring the architecture reflected in the water. Swans drifted quietly along the river, adding to the calm, unhurried atmosphere. From there, I walked up to 📍Achi Shrine(阿智神社), the guardian shrine of Kurashiki, set slightly above the town. From the grounds, you can look back out over the rooftops of the historic district below. For lunch, I stopped at 📍Miyake Shoten Cafe (三宅商店カフェ), a cafe inside a renovated merchant house. I had a traditional Okayama lunch set, followed by cake and coffee, simple, seasonal, and deeply comforting. In the afternoon, I rested at 📍Felicite, an antique shop cafe, where you can get homemade scones baked to order, before browsing local crafts. At 📍Kurashiki Ichiyō-gama (倉敷一陽窯), I chose a Bizen-yaki mug for my morning tea, pottery made for everyday use, not just display. That evening, I stayed at 📍Tsuchiya (土屋), a small boutique hotel filled with intention and thoughtful detail. I especially loved bathing in the hinoki wood bath, a quiet moment to end the day. Dinner was at 📍Pizzeria CONO FORESTA, where I enjoyed a cream pasta and salad made with local Okayama vegetables, followed by Basque cheesecake and tea. The next morning, I had breakfast at 📍Cafe Gewa, an egg and toast set with yogurt and a latte. The space felt warm and local, like dining in a friend’s home. 🚃 Access: From Okayama Station, take the JR line to Kurashiki Station (about 15 minutes). The Bikan Historical Quarter is a short walk from the station. 📍 Kurashiki, Okayama 💾 Save this for your Setouchi itinerary 🌊 A place to slow down and stay awhile For more slow travel in Japan follow me at @AmberJapanTravels!~ @Oyadoo.jp #PR #jrwest #setouchi #kurashiki #okayama

This was one of the most fun solo trips I’ve had in Japan in a long time. 📍Uno City(宇野) sits along the Seto Inland Sea in Okayama Prefecture. It’s best known as the port town where ferries depart for Naoshima and Teshima, but if you’re visiting the art islands, Uno itself is worth slowing down for rather than just passing through. When you arrive at Uno Station, you can pick up a map for a self-guided walking tour to find art installations scattered around the seaside.Instead of being confined to a museum, the art here is folded into everyday life, quietly existing alongside fishing boats, cafes, and residential streets. Along the way, I stopped at 📍Bollard Coffee, a small seaside cafe, for a matcha latte and a moment to rest during the walk. Nearby, there’s also a local 📍Arts and Crafts Gallery, showcasing work rooted in the region rather than designed for mass tourism. For lunch, I ate a thoughtfully crafted course meal at 📍Bluno inside Uno Hotel, before heading back toward the port. Uno works especially well as a base for the art islands, but it’s also a place worth staying a little longer. It’s unhurried, local, and shaped by the sea, an ideal starting point for exploring Setouchi at a slower pace. 🚃 Access: From Okayama Station, take the JR Uno Line to Uno Station (about 50–60 minutes). 🚢 Gateway to Naoshima & Teshima 📍Uno, Tamano City, Okayama 💾 Save this for your Setouchi itinerary For more slow travel in Japan follow me at @AmberJapanTravels!~ @oyadoo.jp #PR #jrwest #setouchi #kurashiki

Buying a train ticket in Japan is actually easy… if you know these tips 👇🚄 1⃣ Choose the right machine Not all ticket machines sell the same tickets. Some are for local/commuter trains, while others sell Shinkansen and Limited Express tickets. Make sure you’re at the correct one before you start! 2⃣ Switch to your language You can change the language at the top of the screen. Most machines offer English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean. 3⃣ Select your ticket type Tap “Purchase Ticket,” then choose the type of train you’re taking. In this video, I selected a Limited Express ticket. From there, choose your departure station, destination, travel date, time, and number of passengers. 4⃣ Choose your seat You can select a window, aisle, or middle seat, or even pick a specific seat from the seatmap. ✨ PRO TIP: The green double circle symbol means that the car has the most available seats. I usually pick that one because it gives you the most options! 5⃣ Important for Shinkansen & Limited Express trains After selecting your seat, make sure you press “Select” and NOT “Limited Express Ticket Only.” These trains require two tickets (a base fare ticket + a Limited Express or Shinkansen ticket). If you only buy one, you might be missing what you need! Save this for your Japan trip 🇯🇵 and follow @AmberJapanTravels and @Oyadoo_jp for more tips to make traveling in Japan easy ✨ ** Filmed as of February 19** #PR #jreast #japantrip #japantravel japantrains

If you’re looking for an off the beaten path spot to add to your Japan itinerary, this is the place! Unzen onsen is located in Japan’s first national park. I really can’t believe I hadn’t heard about it before! And it is in an *ACTIVE volcano (correction from the subtitles). The hotel I stayed in was special too, Mt. Resort Unzen Kyushu Hotel in Nagasaki, which has been welcoming overseas travelers for over a century (and even had a visit from Emperor himself) ! Today, every room offers a private open-air bath and terrace with stunning views of Jigokudani’s steaming hot springs. One of the highlights for me was the gourmet food crafted from fresh, local ingredients from Unzen and the Shimabara Peninsula. It was a fusion of Japanese and western cuisine. Everyone was delicious down to the dessert! They also had complimentary drinks at the café and bar. Timeless, tranquil, and steeped in history, this is Unzen at its finest. #pr #kyusyuhotel #kyusyutravel #mtresort雲仙九州ホテル #雲仙九州ホテル @kyushuhotel_1917_unzen Thanks @oyadoo_jp !

Is it worth visiting Japan’s most popular ski town in the summer? 🌿 You might be surprised that Niseko (in Hokkaido) in the summer is actually kind of a hidden gem! Not only is it about 10 degrees cooler than the main island, but because it’s off-season, everything is MUCH cheaper, including hotels! Here is my full itinerary for Niseko in the summer so you can steal it for your next trip: 🛌 Stay: Yotei Dream One (by @vacationniseko ) Access: ~10-minute drive from Kutchan Station (Hirafu area). 🛶 Niseko Hanazono Resort & SPROUT (@hanazononiseko x @sprout_hanazono ) Hours: Activities typically run 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Summer season). Access: Hanazono area, about 10 mins from Hirafu. 🥾 NAC Niseko Adventure Centre (@nac_centre ) Hours: Tours depart morning/afternoon (usually 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM). While Niseko is a popular ski town in the winter, it becomes a quiet nature escape in the summer. Especially since you can avoid the heat of the main island and take advantage of the off season prices of hotels! Sadly we didn’t get to see Mt.Yotei on this trip, but we will be back for our revenge! Here are all of the things we did on this trip including some things not featured in the video. Make sure to save it for your next trip!: 🛌 Stay: Yotei Dream One (by @vacationniseko) Access: ~10-minute drive from Kutchan Station (Hirafu area). 🛶 Niseko Hanazono Resort & SPROUT (@hanazononiseko x @sprout_hanazono) Hours: Activities typically run 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Summer season). Kaneiji Temple in Ueno was once the most important Buddhist temple of the Edo period, built to guard Edo Castle and serve as the Tokugawa shoguns’ family temple. Many of the shoguns’ graves are here, but the site has long been closed to the public. During this exclusive tour (which is only available for 6 dates!!), you will get an exclusive look at the Tokugawa Shoguns’ Mausoleums! Edo Shogun’s Legacy Trail Tour tour is led by an English guide and it begins in Ueno Park, where the Kaneiji Visual Guide app uses AI to show you what the area looked like during the Edo period. From there, you’ll step into Kaneiji Temple itself, walking the grounds with a monk, joining a traditional tea ceremony, and getting a rare look at the stunning Twin Dragons of Eizan. The day wraps up in Yanaka Ginza, a retro shopping street full of old Tokyo charm (and cats 🐾). Tours are only available on these six dates, so make sure to reserve your spot! 📅 11/13/2025, 11/19/2025, 12/4/2025, 12/10/2025, 1/15/2026, 1/22/2026 For more details check out https://kaneiji.jp/400thanniversary/ 📍@kaneiji_tokyo_ueno For more quiet Japan, follow me at @AmberJapanTravels~

Usually it’s hard to find cafes open for breakfast in Japan let alone in the mountains in the countryside. But we had some luck for my birthday this year and found a cafe inside a renovated 170-year-old soy sauce brewery that opened up at 9:30am (!!) and was serving a full breakfast menu, which we ordered but is not pictured because I ate it before I could film it 😆 There’s so much to see here: there was a tatami room, antique furniture, a library, a shop selling local and organic goods. I enjoyed the old-beam architecture, and natural light pouring in everywhere. The whole surrounding area was peaceful too and felt like stepping into an older version of Japan. 🕰 Hours: 9:30–17:30 (L.O. 17:00) 📅 Closed: 3rd Tuesday of the month 🚗 Access: About 40–50 min from Fukuoka City by car (parking available), or take the train to Ikisan Station or Chikuzen-Maebaru Station and continue by taxi or local bus. If you’re exploring Itoshima, save this for a slow morning or afternoon cafe stop~ ☕️

When I first came to Japan alone at 25, I spent a few quiet days in rural Oita. I didn’t know it then, but those days changed everything. It was the first time I felt how deeply meaningful everyday life could be here: shrines hidden in small corners of neighborhoods, food rooted in local history, landscapes both wild and comforting. People immersed in nature and community. Somewhere on those winding roads, I fell in love with Japan, and with traveling here. Years later, I’m still amazed that exploring these places became my full time job. It’s a privilege, but not an accident. At 28, I left my culinary career, moved alone to Kochi on Shikoku, and rebuilt my life from zero. I studied Japanese, worked full-time, and uploaded to YouTube videos for years without earning a single dime. I did it because I enjoyed it, I loved sharing and connecting with like minded people who shared my love for travel here. Little did I know I was honing my skills for my future career. I still love what I do, but with Japan facing overtourism, being a general “Japan travel creator” no longer feels right. Recently, I’ve started turning down work in Tokyo and Kyoto, a few of the places most overwhelmed. Japan doesn’t have too many tourists. It has too many tourists in a few concentrated places. Meanwhile, countless small towns, the same kinds that first stole my heart, are hoping for visitors. These communities have space, culture, tradition, and people who genuinely want to share their world. The economies there could truly benefit, and travelers could experience something far deeper than crowded itineraries. Of course this isn’t the case with every countryside town, but it is with the ones I work with. So that’s the path I’m choosing. I want to help shift curiosity outward toward places where life moves slower, beauty feels quieter, and connection comes naturally. Through my content, I hope to introduce travelers to countryside spots across Japan places where your visit truly matters. Japan has given me so much. I hope, in some small way, I can give something back. Follow along at @AmberJapanTravels ~ ✨

This year I finally made it to Hokkaido, and there I got to visit a small coastal town called Iwanai ♨️ Tucked along the coast, Iwanai is the kind of town that doesn’t ask for your attention, it earns it. Snow-covered streets, steam rising from onsen baths, and the sound of the sea always nearby. Slip into a yukata and wander between local onsen, warming up as the winter air sharpens your senses. I stayed at Iwanai Onsen, where every window framed the ocean and snow like a painting, especially from the bath at dusk. The hotel is also home to Iwanai Brewery, where I sampled locally brewed craft beers. My favorite was a refreshing watermelon beer made using watermelons grown right here in town. What surprised me most was how much fit into a one-night, two-day stay. Quiet temples scattered through town. Snowy ski slopes waiting patiently for the season to begin. At Kiko-in Temple, I joined a temple music experience led by Narita-san, the head monk. The temple is also home to the largest wooden Buddha in Eastern Japan, overwhelming in the most grounding way. Some of my favorite moments were the simplest ones. Lunch at a retro kissaten with what might be the best tamago-sando of my life. Browsing Muramoto Tent, filled with colorful handmade bags that felt both nostalgic and modern. We barely scratched the surface, and already, I know I want to come back. Next time, slower. PS: There’s currently a Discover Iwanai stamp rally happening until February 8th 2026! Collect stamps from participating locations, and if you gather five, you’ll receive a special Iwanai T-shirt 👕✨ Places featured in this video: 📍Iwanai Onsen — Onsen hotel I stayed in 📍Raiden Resort — Newly renovated onsen hotel 📍Sansan No Yu — Onsen hotel & home to Honey, the onsen dog 📍Iwanai Brewery — Craft beer brewery at the hotel 📍Kiko-in Temple — Home to the largest wooden Buddha in Eastern Japan 📍Muramoto Tent (@muramototent ) 📍Iwanai Resort — Ski resort 📍Sabboru — Retro Japanese lunch spot Check out @iwanai.onsen for more information and follow @AmberJapanTravels for countryside Japan travel~ #iwanai #hokkaido #discoveriwanai

I spent a day in a tiny mountain village in Shizuoka, Tawarazawa, a place with roughly 300 residents, and it quickly became one of my most unforgettable trips. Our day started at Sairyuji, a small temple tucked in the mountains. We lit incense, and had some tea while learning about the history of the town. Then we joined a mochi-pounding session where we tried our best to pound the mochi like the pros. It was a lot of fun(I wasn’t very good at it though) 😆 Next was another highlight: participating in the village festival and carrying the mikoshi (portable shrine). I’ve always wanted to try it, and this was finally my chance. The chants, and the steady beat of the taiko drums were exciting. I felt shy chanting out loud at first but with the energy of the festival I quickly learned the words and got into it. 🏮 After that was the lion dance performance (Shishimai) At one point the lion came over and “ate” money off my head for good luck. 🍀 A lot of the children in the village were also part of the performances. It was clear that they had practiced a lot. Seeing them take part made it clear how carefully these traditions are passed down by the community. We thought the activities were over for the day, boarded the bus to head back to the station, or so we thought… The bus pulled over to an open field and an announcement came on that we were making a secret last stop… The village surprised us with a firework display! Shizuoka is famous for its unique hand-held fireworks, a tradition dating back to the Edo period and once admired by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu himself. This is also the only fireworks festival in Japan where you don’t just watch, you participate with sparklers. I’m not sure if the camera could capture just how cool this really was. For more information check out @hyakkadan !~ For more quiet adventures around Japan, follow along @AmberJapanTravels ✨

Follow me at @AmberJapanTravels for more quiet Japan spots~ 🍵

日本語字幕は後に続きます⬇️ Ashikaga in Tochigi Japan is a historic town that rewards anyone looking for a local spot filled with history and good food.
Once the center of power during the Muromachi Period, Ashikaga was ruled by the Ashikaga shogunate, and that legacy still lives on in its temples, shrines, and streets today. From walking through the colorful torii gates at Ashikaga Orihime Shrine to pulling a fortune at Banna-ji or Kadota Inari Shrine, the town feels quietly timeless.
I spent the day exploring Japan’s oldest school, Ashikaga Gakko, refueling with a retro unagi lunch at DAI-NI Toritsune, and taking a break with a matcha latte and Basque cheesecake at Base LOOM. I also stopped by Kabasaki Shrine, a lesser-known spot with deep ties to local history. 🚃 Access from Tokyo:
About 1.5–2 hours from central Tokyo via JR lines, easy for a relaxed day trip or overnight stay. If you’re already visiting Ashikaga Flower Park, don’t make the mistake of leaving too soon. The town itself is the hidden gem! 📍 Ashikaga Orihime Shrine
📍 DAI-NI Toritsune
📍 Ashikaga School (Ashikaga Gakko)
📍 Base LOOM
📍 Kabasaki Shrine
📍 Banna-ji Temple
📍 Kadota Inari Shrine Save this for your next Japan trip and follow me at @AmberJapanTravels for more quiet Japan~

Ashikaga was once the political center of Japan during the Muromachi Period under the Ashikaga shogunate, the town continues to honor its samurai past through the 足利鎧武者行列(Ashikaga Yoroi Musha Gyōretsu), also known as the Armor Procession. Each year, locals take to the streets wearing historically accurate samurai armor, carefully recreated to match, including armor worn by female samurai. Rather than a performance, the procession feels like stepping into a moving piece of history. The march concludes at 鑁阿寺(Banna-ji), where the group takes part in 節分(Setsubun), throwing beans to ward off evil and invite good fortune for the year ahead. 🚃 Access from Tokyo:Ashikaga is about 1.5–2 hours from central Tokyo via JR lines, making it an easy day trip or overnight stay. This is why Ashikaga feels so special, history here isn’t just remembered, it’s experienced. Save this for your next Japan trip, and follow @AmberJapanTravels for more meaningful Japan travel✨ 足利は、室町時代に足利将軍家のもとで日本の政治の中心地として栄えた町。

🌸 Have you heard of the countryside town in Nara called Yoshino? Most people know it for its cherry blossoms cherry blossoms, but recently I went there to try its famous food “kudzu” For centuries, Yoshino has been known as the home of Japan’s purest kudzu (arrowroot). The roots are harvested and washed dozens of times in the region’s crystal clear spring water, the same water that gives life to the cherry blossom trees on Mount Yoshino. 💧 🌱Kudzu is naturally vegan so there are LOTS of vegan options on this cafe walk too~ This kudzu starch becomes the base for traditional sweets like kudzumochi, kudzukiri, and kudzuyu. They’re silky, translucent desserts that have been loved since the Edo period, but these days you can find lots of other kudzu desserts in Yoshino too, like kudzu ice cream parfaits! There are tons of cafes here and most of them have take-out options or sweets that you can take home as omiage. You can go on a self-guided walking tour to try them all!🍡✨ Check out the link in my bio to see the walking tour guide map and don’t forget to follow me at @amberjapantravels to more quiet Japan~
