But behind those hyper-realistic displays are craftsmen quietly facing a reality that’s becoming all too common in Japan: aging clientele, fewer orders, and an uncertain future for their trade. I sat down with the second-generation owner of Yamato Sample Factory to hear it straight from him, and I’ll let his passion for the craft speak for itself. The good news? Koenji is loved for its hipster aesthetic, the vintage shops, live houses, and that moody charm. But go a little deeper and you find something else entirely: a neighborhood built by resistance. From the 1960s rock cafes where young people gathered just to listen to imported music, to the freeters of the 90s who refused the salaryman path, to Tokyo’s first major anti-nuclear protest in 2011, Koenji has been Tokyo’s counterculture capital for decades. Making this episode sent me down a rabbit hole I wasn’t ready for. Does counterculture still exist under late-stage capitalism? When every “alternative” gets absorbed and resold, is real resistance even possible anymore? It’s a hard topic and I’m still sitting with it. But more than anything else, what made me genuinely happy was finding Uptown Records. Unmanned, unpolished, politics fully on display, and stacked with zines. I had no idea zines were even still a thing. But there they were, up for grabs for anyone keen. Found a halal ramen spot in Ueno and I just know my Muslim nieces are going to love this. Shinjuku-tei serves A5 wagyu ramen in the heart of Tokyo, and it’s 100% halal certified with a prayer room inside. Staff greets you in English the moment you walk in, and they have table seats (rare for a ramen joint, great if you’re with family). I went with the set meal: A5 wagyu ramen, wagyu sushi they torch right in front of you, and chicken karaage. I didn’t expect one of my favorite experiences in Nara to be this refreshing. The Wakamiya 15 Shrine Pilgrimage takes you away from the crowds and deep into Kasuga Taisha’s forest, visiting 15 small shrines in a set order.
