The Japanese Silk That Dates Back to the Age of Himiko 🐛 99% of Japanese people don’t know this. Tensan — the Japanese wild silkworm, also known as Yamamayu. This powerful little creature eventually creates a beautiful green cocoon, from which Japan’s unique green silk is produced. And here’s where it gets fascinating. At the Makimuku Archaeological Site in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, a silk pouch-like textile dating back to the 3rd century, around the time of Queen Himiko, was excavated. Scientific analysis revealed that the silk fibers were made from Tensan silk. Inside this tiny cocoon lies a story connecting Japan’s nature, people’s lives, and its long history. To know Tensan is to discover another part of Japan. I want to share this precious part of Japanese heritage with the next generation — and with the world. 🌿 With Tensan, I will carry the spirit of “Wa” into the future.
