Sea lions are marine mammals in the family Otariidae, a group that also includes fur seals. They are known for their external ear flaps, long front flippers, and ability to “walk” on land by rotating their hind flippers forward. Sea lions are found in coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, from California and South America to Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Japan. Sea lions are social animals and often gather in large colonies called rookeries or haul-out sites. They communicate using loud barks, growls, and other calls, which can make their colonies extremely noisy. Their diet mainly includes fish, squid, and crustaceans, and they are skilled swimmers capable of diving to significant depths in search of food. Unlike true seals, sea lions are generally more agile on land and can move with surprising speed. They are also considered highly intelligent and have been trained for research, rescue, and military-related tasks. Some sea lion populations are stable, while others face threats from overfishing, pollution, habitat disturbance, and entanglement in fishing gear.
