Growing up in the US, taking a gap year or backpacking solo through different countries was never “a thing” compared to other Western countries. Honestly, a lot of that isn’t by choice. Between limited PTO, student debt, and a culture that equates rest with laziness, travel just isn’t as accessible as it looks from the outside. But I also think about the people who do have the means and want to travel but choose material items instead. There’s this idea that travel has to mean resorts, all-inclusives, and shopping and that keeps so many people from even trying. Meanwhile in Europe and Australia, hopping on a flight with a backpack and figuring it out is practically a rite of passage. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive. Stay in hostels, eat local, take the cheap flight with crazy layovers! It’s a privilege that i’m so grateful for and it’s one more people could access if we stopped equating travel with luxury and started seeing it as something worth prioritizing, especially in your youth! #solotravel #backpacking #krabi #thailand
